You’ve just learned that your cat has diabetes. You are worried and a little scared. I understand because I felt the same way when Teddy’s vet called with the test results.
There is Hope
First, I want to give you hope – Type II diabetes in cats can be brought into remission. I know because I’ve done it. The second thing I want to give you is encouragement. You can do this. You have to do this because your kitty’s life literally depends upon it. The third thing I want to give you is advice. During Teddy’s journey I learned a lot about diabetes, medications, insulin, and feline nutrition. I’ve created this website to share what I’ve learned.
Update: Teddy had a wellness exam earlier this week. The normal blood-glucose range is 72-175. His blood glucose level is 107. That’s with no insulin or any other medication and a diet of just Friskies Savory Shreds.
UPDATE: We’ve recently discovered that Friskies has changed the formula for Savory Shreds, and the carbohydrate content is 18%. We are trying several lo-carb (<10% carbs) cat foods to see what Teddy likes. I’m also thinking of making my own cat food.
UPDATE: We are now feeding Teddy the following:
- Royal Canin Glycobalance. The vet gave us a couple cans and Teddy liked it. We then got a prescription (script) from the vet, which I’ve scanned and emailed to Chewy.com. They keep in on file and I order a month’s worth at a time.
- Fancy Feast Classic Pate Tender Beef Feast
